Since 1989, five historic aircraft have soared overhead, suspended from the ceiling in our Large Exhibits Gallery at IWM London. Last month the first of these aircraft, a Sopwith Camel, was lowered to the ground and dismantled for safe transport as we prepare for the redevelopment of IWM London in January 2013.

PM David Cameron with IWM Young Reporters

PM David Cameron was interviewed by IWM Young Reporters from Archbishop Sumner School today following the announcement of the UK’s plans to mark the First World War Centenary.

Today, five IWM Young Reporters met Prime Minister David Cameron at IWM London.

The IWM Young Reporters are from two local primary schools, Archbishop Sumner School and Oasis Academy Johanna in south London. These Year 5 students are honing their reporting and investigative journalism skills so that they can report back to their communities and the wider public on all the changes that are going on at IWM London in the run-up to the First World War Centenary in 2014.

We are delighted to announce that IWM has secured the £4.5million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to help finance the creation of new ground-breaking First World War Galleries at IWM London which are set to open in June 2014 to mark the First World War Centenary.

Three cheers! At a planning committee meeting last night, London Borough of Southwark approved the planning and listed building consent applications for the first phase of our masterplan to transform IWM London. Following the planning committee’s approval, work on architects Foster + Partners plans is set to begin later this year and be completed in time to commemorate the Centenary of the outbreak of the First World War in 2014.

IWM Director-General Diane Lees explains the planned redevelopment work for IWM London

Last night, the IWM Foundation, an independent charitable trust, hosted its patron Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge at a reception to launch a £35million fundraising effort to transform our First World War galleries in time for 2014.

In a deeply personal speech, Lord Rothermere, founder of the IWM Foundation, highlighted the ‘devastating impact’ the First World War had on many thousands of families in the country, including his own.

His great-grandfather, the 1st Viscount Rothermere, Harold Sidney Harmsworth, tragically lost two of his three sons in the fighting.

Claiming the lives of over 16 million people across the globe most people in the world have a connection to it, either through their own family history, links to their local community or because of its long term impact on the world we live in today.

It was during this time that IWM (Imperial War Museums) was founded as a lasting memorial to all those who played their part in the conflict, be that at home or on the fighting front and we continue in this role today.
